Soft Christmas Peppermints
Ingredients:
3 ¾ cups powdered sugar (plus extra for dusting)
⅓ cup sweetened condensed milk
½ teaspoon peppermint extract
Red and green food coloring (gel preferred)
Granulated sugar (for coating)
Directions:
Prepare the Base Mixture:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the powdered sugar, sweetened condensed milk, and peppermint extract. Stir together until a soft dough begins to form.
Knead Until Smooth:
Lightly dust your work surface with powdered sugar and knead the dough until smooth and pliable. If it’s too sticky, add a bit more powdered sugar; if too dry, add a teaspoon more of condensed milk.
Divide and Color:
Divide the peppermint dough evenly into three portions.
Leave one portion white.
Tint one portion red with a few drops of red food coloring.
Tint the last portion green with green food coloring.
Knead each color until evenly distributed.
Shape the Mints:
Roll each colored portion into a long rope about ½ inch thick. Cut into small, bite-sized pieces (about ¾ inch each). You can also roll them into little balls or press with a fork for a classic peppermint look.
Coat and Dry:
Roll each piece lightly in granulated sugar to prevent sticking. Arrange the mints on a parchment-lined tray in a single layer. Let them dry at room temperature for 24 hours, uncovered, until firm to the touch but still soft inside.
Store and Enjoy:
Store the soft peppermints in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. Perfect for gifting, dessert trays, or after-dinner treats!
