Ingredients
10-12 whole cloves
4 cups water
2 large oranges (preferably organic)
1-2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (optional, for sweetness)
A small cinnamon stick (optional, for extra warmth)
A slice of fresh ginger (optional, for added health benefits)
Instructions
Prepare the Orange Peels: Wash the oranges thoroughly, then peel them, trying to keep the peels in large pieces. Set the fruit aside for another use. Cut the peels into strips if desired.
Infuse the Cloves: In a large pot, add the water, orange peels, and cloves. If using cinnamon and ginger, add them at this stage as well.
Simmer and Steep: Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat. Once it reaches a boil, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld together and the beneficial compounds to be released.
Sweeten: If you prefer a sweeter tonic, stir in honey or maple syrup after removing the pot from heat. Adjust sweetness to taste.
Strain and Serve: Pour the tonic through a strainer into mugs, discarding the solids. Serve warm for a comforting, immune-boosting drink, or let it cool and enjoy over ice for a refreshing alternative.
Storage: Leftover tonic can be stored in a glass jar in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat or enjoy chilled as needed.
Enjoy.
