Ingredients
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
1 cup warm water
2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
Additional butter or oil for the skillet
Instructions
Combine Dry Ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 1 tablespoon of sugar (if desired). Mix thoroughly.
Incorporate Wet Ingredients:
Create a well in the center of the dry mixture. Pour in 1 cup of warm water and 2 tablespoons of olive oil or melted butter. Stir until the mixture comes together into a sticky dough.
Knead the Dough:
Lightly flour a clean surface and transfer the dough onto it. Knead for 5-7 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. If it’s too sticky, sprinkle a bit more flour as needed.
Let the Dough Rest:
Shape the dough into a ball and let it rest for 10 minutes to relax the gluten.
Preheat the Skillet:
While the dough is resting, preheat a cast-iron skillet or heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat. Add a small amount of butter or oil to coat the bottom.
Shape and Flatten the Dough:
Divide the dough into 4-6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and flatten it to about 1/4-inch thickness using your hands or a rolling pin.
Cook the Bread:
Place the flattened dough pieces into the hot skillet, cooking 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through. Adjust the heat as necessary to avoid burning.
Enjoy.
